Stroke amongst young adults in Australia

Tim’s experience with stroke is what has inspired the Glendinning Family to establish Tim’s Fund. They don’t want other families to have to go through what they experienced.

Stroke amongst young adults in Australia is a complex and challenging issue. Here are some of the headline facts and figures:

  • Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability.
  • There are currently 142,500 Australian stroke survivors of working age.
  • International evidence shows increasing incidence of stroke amongst young people with many remaining undiagnosed.
  • 30 percent of young survivors are left with moderate to severe disability.
  • Two years after a stroke most survivors report that they have a significantly reduced quality of life. Many are affected by depression and anxiety.

Young stroke survivors are left with many complex challenges that are unique to their young age and early stage of life – re-learning basic skills, changing family dynamics, returning to work and financial challenges, restrictions of mobility and driving, as well as looking after their own health and wellbeing.

Every stroke experience is unique and the recovery journey can be overwhelming full of uncertainty and sometimes isolation. All young stroke survivors need and deserve the opportunity to live and live well after stroke.

You can help to make a difference to the lives of young adult stroke survivors and their families.

Please consider supporting the Tim Glendinning Memorial Fund for Young Adult Stroke and stop stroke from devastating more families.
