Leave a lasting legacy to stroke

August 30, 2018
Ken Lyons lost his beloved wife Jill to stroke ten years ago after more than 60 years of marriage.

Jill’s passing left a huge hole in his life, but it also led him to find a cause he is passionate about – preventing stroke and ensuring stroke survivors have access to the very best treatment and care.

The 94 year old Melbourne man is now planning to leave a gift in his Will to the Stroke Foundation.

“Jill and I had a wonderful life together - stroke is a disease you really don’t want to see your loved one experience,” Ken said.

“Stroke kills more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer and is a leading cause of disability.

“I want to make a difference to other people’s lives by contributing to an organisation which invests in research and supports stroke survivors and their families,” he said.

Include a Charity Week is held from 10-14 September, encouraging more Australians to leave a gift in their Will to charity as well as providing for their loved ones.

Ken said it was a good time to think about how you can leave a legacy and help others.

“You don’t have to be rich. Every bit helps and it will make you feel good,” he said.

Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan said she was incredibly thankful for the generosity and compassion of the community.

“Through our wonderful donors, like Ken, we are able to continue our important work to create a future free from preventable stroke and give stroke survivors the best possible support,” Ms McGowan said.

“While there has been great progress in the fight to overcome stroke and reduce its impact on Australians, there is still a long way to go.

“Please consider including a gift in your Will – of any size - to the Stroke Foundation and help us beat stroke.”
