Drop the salt

Drop the salt: Having too much salt in your diet can lead to high blood pressure. Almost all Australians would benefit from reducing the amount of salt in their diet by:

  • Not adding salt at the table or when cooking
  • Reading the labels on foods and choosing ‘low salt’ or ‘no added salt’ foods. Low salt food has less than 120mg sodium per 100g (sodium is another word for salt)
  • If you can’t find one below this level choose the lowest you can find or switch to a different product
  • Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and only buying low-salt pre-prepared foods

High blood pressure and stroke: High blood pressure (hypertension) is the most important known risk factor for stroke. High blood pressure can cause damage to blood vessel walls, which may eventually lead to a stroke.
