Stroke care units
Stroke is a medical emergency. If you think someone is suffering a stroke call 000 immediately.
Hospitals that have specialist staff and services specifically for stroke have been shown in research to improve care and outcomes for people with stroke.
Care in these stroke care units is recommended in national clinical guidelines and policy documents. The Acute Stroke Services Framework 2015 recommends all hospitals admitting 75 or more patients with stroke per year should have a stroke unit.
It is important to be aware of hospitals which have specialised stroke care units. The following list provides these details, as well as if they offer thrombolysis, a drug used very early after stroke (within first few hours) to dissolve the clot causing the stroke.
