Last chance to nominate for the 2016 Stroke Awards

May 24, 2016

Don’t miss out on your chance to nominate an inspirational person in your community for a 2016 Stroke Award.

The Stroke Foundation is urging local residents to get their nominations in before applications close on Tuesday 31 May 2016.

Stroke Foundation Director of Communications Mary Orgill said the Awards recognised the outstanding Australians dedicated to supporting and advocating for stroke survivors and the broader stroke community

“One in six people will have a stroke in their lifetime and there is one stroke in this country every 10 minutes. Its impact can be devastating. Helping stroke survivors and their families and carers negotiate the days, weeks and months after a stroke is vital work in our community,’’ Ms Orgill said.

“We want to acknowledge the amazing individuals who carry out this important work and celebrate the stroke survivors, carers, health professionals and volunteers who improve the state of stroke in our country.

“In holding the awards, we also want to raise awareness of stroke and the challenges faced by stroke survivors, their families and carers.”

Nominations for the annual awards are open until Tuesday 31 May. There are five award categories, each highlighting an area where people are working to improve the lives of those touched by stroke.

Ms Orgill encouraged local residents to nominate those in their community making a difference.

“Every day we see incredible examples of people going above and beyond to lessen the significant burden stroke places on our community,” she said.

“The Stroke Awards are one of the ways people can encourage support for stroke survivors, their families and carers, and increase awareness of how we can work together in the fight against stroke.

“I would encourage people to nominate the stroke champions in their community.”

The 2016 Stroke Award categories are:

Open to individuals who are improving the lives of stroke survivors, their families and carers, and raising awareness of their needs.

Open to health professionals and researchers who have demonstrated a long term commitment of at least five years in the field of stroke.

Open to stroke survivors in the community who are actively pursuing creative achievements.

Open to individuals who have fundraised for the Stroke Foundation.

Open to stroke survivors and carers who have demonstrated exceptional courage and hope in facing recovery after stroke.
