Adelaide stroke specialist wins national award
Associate Professor Timothy Kleinig has been recognised in the 2020 Stroke Foundation Stroke Awards for his extraordinary commitment to driving improvements in the quality of stroke treatment and care in South Australia (SA).
Today, A/Prof Kleinig was announced as the recipient of Stroke Foundation President’s Achievement Award. This award celebrates exceptional individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Stroke Foundation and demonstrated exemplary dedication to improving stroke services.
A/Prof Kleinig wears many hats. He is head of Neurology at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Clinical Director for Stroke for the Country Health Rural Support Service, Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide, Director of Clinical Research at the SA Health and Medical Research Institute and a former member of the Stroke Foundation Clinical Council.
A champion of stroke, A/Prof Kleinig said winning this award was an honour and a privilege.
“Stroke Foundation is a great organisation which works tirelessly to make life better people for with stroke and their families around Australia,’’ he said,
“I am proud my work is contributing to that vision. I am passionate about ensuring all South Australians have access to the best-practise treatment which saves lives.”
Stroke Foundation Board President Professor James Angus AO congratulated A/Prof Kleinig on being named the President’s Achievement Award winner.
“I can’t speak highly enough of A/Prof Kleinig’s drive, dedication and contribution to research and improving stroke treatment,” Prof Angus said.
“Of particular note, is his work in the establishment and operation of a telestroke system, which is making a big difference to outcomes for people with stroke in rural and regional areas of SA.
”Stroke Foundation is so fortunate to work closely with this outstanding clinician as we continue our mission to prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery.”
The President’s Achievement Award was judged by Professor James Angus, Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan and board members.
The Stroke Awards recognise the unsung heroes of stroke. Almost 60 people were nominated this year across six categories.
