Young Sydney stroke survivor aims high in recovery

West Pennant Hills stroke survivor Priya Sharma will celebrate how far she’s come in her recovery by climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge on her five-year stroke anniversary.

The 29-year-old was not able to walk, talk or perform everyday tasks like eating with a knife and fork when stroke struck on 18 July 2015.

Five years on, Priya has made incredible gains throughout her recovery and is ready to take on this next challenge.

“My stroke was a life-changing experience; especially at an age when stroke was the furthest thing on my mind,” Priya said.

“Being able to walk again was a huge achievement and I have continued to push myself further in so many ways. This climb will be a physical and mental challenge, but I know it will be an incredible feat once I reach the top.

“Every year of recovery is a milestone worth celebrating.”

Priya has used her stroke experience to raise awareness of the disease in her local community and on a state and national level. She is a Stroke Foundation StrokeSafe speaker and has established strong relationships with her local Members of Parliament through her advocacy work.

Priya will also utilise her bridge climb to raise funds for Stroke Foundation, helping its mission to prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery.

Stroke Foundation New South Wales State Manager Rhian Paton-Kelly applauded Priya for her incredible efforts.

“Priya has been an enormous advocate for stroke prevention and awareness, which has helped improve the lives of others impacted by stroke,” Ms Paton-Kelly said.

“Priya’s willingness to conquer this climb on her fifth stroke anniversary is a testament to the courage and resilience she has shown throughout her recovery. She should truly be proud.”

Priya’s Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb will take place on Saturday 18 July 2020 at 3pm.
