Courageous Tommy Quick wins national award

May 04, 2022

An Ascot Vale resident, who cycled more than 3,600 kilometres to raise awareness of stroke and social inclusion for people with disabilities has today been announced as the winner of the Courage Award at the 2022 Stroke Foundation Stroke Awards.

Melbourne’s Tommy Quick set off on his epic 4points Australia challenge in September last year, aiming to reach the four furthest points of mainland Australia on a recumbent trike.

The determined 29-year-old, who experienced a stroke at the age of 13, was more than one third of the way through the trip, when he was tragically struck by a car, breaking his pelvis. The horrific accident was witnessed by Tommy’s parents who were following him in the support van.

After a series of operations, Tommy has had to relearn to walk, and is making excellent progress. He has documented his recovery through his social media accounts, drawing much admiration from his community of followers.

Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan congratulated Tommy on his award, saying his relentless courage was undeniable.

“Making a difference in the lives of those impacted by stroke is often the driver behind the people who set out to make a difference in our community. Tommy hasn’t let any set back stop him.

“Tommy demonstrates incredible courage every day, he is truly an inspiration to us all,” she said.

The Stroke Awards celebrate the unsung heroes in our community who go above and beyond to improve the lives of Australians affected by stroke. This includes the survivors of stroke, carers, volunteers, fundraisers, health professionals and researchers and members of the community.

There are seven award categories in total: Stroke Warrior, Improving Life after Stroke, Creative, Courage, Fundraiser of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and President’s Achievement.

The Courage Award category is sponsored by Ipsen a leading biopharmaceutical company, developing therapies in oncology, rare disease, and neuroscience. The award recognises the indomitable courage and hope shown by survivors and carers in stroke recovery.
