Survivor and nurse skydive for stroke

November 20, 2019
Northern Beaches stroke survivor Graeme Cocks, 71, and Stroke Clinical Nurse Consultant Lucy Nolan, 32, will skydive raising awareness of stroke and funds for the Stroke Foundation. The pair will jump in the sky above Wollongong as part of Stroke Foundation’s Stride4Stroke challenge.

Stride4Stroke is a physical activity challenge held throughout November. It encourages the community to be active and reduce their own stroke risk, whilst raising funds to support stroke survivors and their families on the recovery journey.

Graeme will skydive after he suffered a stroke in May earlier this year.

“Recovering from stroke, it’s important to me that I stay active and live life to the fullest,” Graeme said.

“I’d like to encourage others to get moving and improve their health.”

Lucy has worked as a nurse for the past 12 years. She started working at Northern Beaches Hospital six months ago, contributing to the establishment of an Acute Stroke Unit.

“Throughout my career, I have seen the devastating effects of stroke. But with the right treatment, good recovery is possible,” Lucy said.

“I know these funds will go a long way in supporting stroke survivors and their families.”

Stroke Foundation New South Wales State Manager Rhian Paton-Kelly applauded Graeme and Lucy on being involved in Stride4Stroke and encouraged others to join them.

“Stroke attacks the brain and can change lives in an instant,” Ms Paton-Kelly said.

“There are almost 160,000 stroke survivors living in our state, many with ongoing disabilities.

“But there is life after stroke and together we can make the recovery journey a little easier.

“This November, grab your friends, set an activity and fundraising goal and register online at Stride4Stroke.org.au to join the challenge,” she said.

Every dollar raised through Stride4Stroke will have an enormous impact. It will go towards vital Stroke Foundation programs like free telephone advice service StrokeLine (1800 787 653) and follow up services which help survivors and their families transition to life back home after stroke and throughout the recovery journey.
