Final call for Stroke Awards nominations

February 05, 2019
Time is running out to nominate an inspirational person in your community for the 2019 Stroke Foundation Stroke Awards

The Stroke Awards are held annually and recognise individuals who have gone above and beyond to make life better for people with stroke. These include carers, stroke survivors, researchers, health professionals and members of the community.

Nominations close on Friday 15 February.

Winner of the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award Brenda Booth said it was a tremendous honour to named as a finalist in her category, let alone win the award.

“Winning a Stroke Award was a very proud and humbling moment for me because there are so many people right across Australia who are doing a lot of amazing work to raise awareness of stroke, achieve incredible personal goals post-stroke and improve treatment, care and support for stroke survivors and their families,” Brenda said.

“If you know someone who should be recognised for their dedication to stroke, please nominate them. It’s a wonderful way of letting them know their efforts are appreciated and important.”

Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability. It happens in an instant and its impact can be devastating.

Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan said Brenda Booth was a wonderful example of someone who has been strongly committed to stemming the tide of stroke for many years at a local, state and national level. Brenda’s contribution has included public speaking, advocating with members of parliament and involvement in Stroke Foundation campaigns, committees and activities.

“The Stroke Foundation wants to know about and celebrate people like Brenda, who are often quiet achievers who donate a great deal of their own time to lessen the burden of stroke on the community,” Ms McGowan said.

“These individuals are collectively making a difference to the state of stroke in this country.”

The 2019 Stroke Foundation Stroke Awards run across six categories: Improving Life After Stroke, the Creative Award, Fundraiser of the Year, Courage Award, Volunteer of the Year and President’s Achievement Award.

Winners will be announced at the Stroke Foundation’s Stroke Awards ceremony in Melbourne in May.
