Statue of Liberty Swim for Freedom from Stroke
August 06, 2013
Brisbane resident and Foundation supporter Marion Slattery is set to embark on a symbolic swim around the Statue of Liberty to fundraise to stop stroke.
The Statue of Liberty is a renowned symbol of freedom and Marion’s swim supports the Foundation’s aspirations for a world free from the suffering caused by stroke.
“I wanted to complete my 30th open water swim and support a good cause. As a physiotherapist I work very closely with stroke survivors. I see the struggles they face on a daily basis, so it seemed natural to support the National Stroke Foundation,” said Marion.
On 16th August Marion will don her swimmers and join 400 others in a 1.2km swim around the torch bearing arm synonymous with the land of possibility. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French to America. Marion’s ambitious swim is a gift to the 420,000 people currently living with stroke in Australia.
“Stroke is not a glamorous health issue. It does not get the attention it deserves. This is my chance to make a difference to the current profile of stroke”, she said.
Marion is a member of the Albany Creek Masters Swim Club in Brisbane. She will be completing the Liberty Island Swim as part of the Foundation’s community fundraising program Do it 4 Stroke.
