Stroke Awards 2018

December 21, 2017
Nominations open: Stroke Awards 2018

The Stroke Foundation is on the hunt for local residents making life better within the stroke community, with nominations for the 2018 Stroke Awards now open.

The awards are an opportunity to celebrate stroke survivors and commend carers, volunteers, health professionals and researchers who work tirelessly to improve the lives of those affected by stroke.

Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan said the awards recognised the outstanding Australians dedicated to treating, supporting and advocating for stroke survivors and the broader stroke community.

“One in six people will have a stroke in their lifetime and there is one stroke in this country every nine minutes. It happens in an instant and its impact can be devastating,’’ Ms McGowan said.

“Helping stroke survivors, their families and carers negotiate the days, weeks and months after a stroke is vital work in our community.

“We want to acknowledge and celebrate the amazing people who carry out this important work and improve the state of stroke in our country.

“In holding the awards we also want to raise awareness of stroke and the challenged faced by stroke survivors loved ones.”

Nominations for the ninth annual Stroke Awards are now open and will close on Friday 16 February 2018 and winners will be announced at the Stroke Foundation’s Stroke Awards Ceremony in Melbourne during May 2018.

Ms McGowan encouraged community ambassadors to nominate people in their community who were making a difference.

“Every day we see incredible examples of people going above and beyond to lessen the significant burden stroke places on our community,” she said.

“The Stroke Awards is an opportunity to draw attention to those who do the vital work to prevent, beat and treat stroke.

“I would encourage people to nominate the stroke champions in their community.
