Speak up on heart disease and stroke

November 29, 2018
Australians have been given the opportunity to have their say on the future of two of Australia’s biggest killers, heart disease and stroke.

A survey is now open as part of the National Heart and Stroke Action Plan, a joint project of the Federal Government, Stroke Foundation and Heart Foundation.

The online survey will provide the community with a voice on what is needed to improve stroke and heart disease prevention, treatment, research and support in Australia.

Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan said the feedback provided by the survey was vital to the development of the National Heart and Stroke Action Plan.

“We want to hear from people from all walks of life, ranging from those directly touched by these diseases, to carers and health professionals,” Ms McGowan said.

“It is those who have direct experience who are best placed to know what may have the biggest impact as we strive for better outcomes for individuals and their families, the wider community and the health care system.”

The National Heart and Stroke Action Plan will develop a coordinated response to heart disease and stroke to avoid premature deaths and ease the growing burden on the health system.

Heart Foundation Group CEO Adjunct Professor John Kelly AM encouraged people to take the time to complete the survey.

“We need your input to identify gaps in the current system and to prioritise actions that federal, state and territory governments  can implement to reduce the toll of heart disease and stroke in our communities,” Professor Kelly said.

“The survey should take no more than 15 minutes and is open until Friday 14 December, 2018.

“We must do all we can to prevent chronic disease, reduce avoidable hospital admissions, build on our existing health care services and improve the quality of life for people living with heart disease and stroke, and their families.”

The Federal Government has provided $170,000 towards the development of the National Heart and Stroke Action Plan. It is the first of its kind and will help guide resource allocation to life-saving interventions.
