Hobart man’s selfless volunteering efforts acknowledged with a national award
A South Hobart resident who is passionate about spreading awareness of stroke in the community has today been announced as the Volunteer of the Year at the 2022 Stroke Foundation Stroke Awards.
Tasmania’s only finalist, Tony Howe, has been a volunteer for Stroke Foundation’s StrokeSafe Speaker Program for six years. He has selflessly used his own experience with stroke to share important messages about prevention and stroke symptoms with community groups and businesses.
Tony has also generously volunteered his time to be involved in Stroke Foundation information stands, fundraising events and letterbox drops.
Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan thanked Tony for his outstanding contribution.
“Volunteers are the backbone of our community. We are so grateful people give our organisation their precious time and their skill and Tony’s work is an outstanding example,” Ms McGowan said.
“Stroke Foundation absolutely relies on volunteers, many of whom are people with a personal, lived experience of stroke. That is why everything they do has real impact.”
The Stroke Awards celebrate the unsung heroes in our community who go above and beyond to improve the lives of Australians affected by stroke. This includes the survivors of stroke, carers, volunteers, fundraisers, health professionals and researchers and members of the community.
There are seven award categories in total: Stroke Warrior, Improving Life after Stroke, Creative, Courage, Fundraiser of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and President’s Achievement.
The Volunteer of the Year category recognises those outstanding volunteers whose dedicated service has made a significant difference. It is proudly sponsored by NAB Education & Community Business.
