Queensland siblings win inaugural national award for their dedicated advocacy

May 04, 2022

A Brisbane brother and sister team who have demonstrated an ongoing passion and drive to raise awareness of childhood stroke, have today been announced as the inaugural Stroke Warrior Award winners at the 2022 Stroke Foundation Stroke Awards.

Elliot and Sophie Clayton individually and collectively raise awareness of stroke, highlighting that age does not need to be a barrier to make a positive difference. Stroke impacted their lives more than most when Sophie (now 16) was just four years old.

Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan congratulated the siblings, thanking them for their tenacity and dedication.

“This brand-new award recognises the contribution of a person aged under 18 in stroke awareness, fundraising or advocacy, and our inaugural winners are standout candidates. They are definitely stroke warriors,” she said.

Over the past few years Sophie and Elliot have honed their approach, with Sophie speaking to State politicians and Elliot focusing on Federal representatives. Both have fundraised for stroke including through Stride4Stroke and running a bake sale at school.

“They have been ambitious, and they have been brave. Their efforts have been commended by the politicians they have targeted, and constantly impress our wider community,” Ms McGowan said.

“If this is the future of Australia’s advocacy community, we’re all in good hands.”

The Stroke Awards celebrate the unsung heroes in our community who go above and beyond to improve the lives of Australians affected by stroke. This includes the survivors of stroke, carers, volunteers, fundraisers, health professionals and researchers and members of the community.
