Sarah Matheson AM appointed President of Stroke Foundation
Stroke Foundation has appointed Sarah Matheson AM as President of the Board, marking an important step as the organisation continues to grow its national impact across prevention, treatment and recovery.
Sarah brings 25 years of governance experience in complex organisations including health, research, education and training, underpinned by a distinguished career as a globally recognised commercial lawyer. Sarah is currently Deputy Chair of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation and the immediate past Chair of The Australian Ballet School.
Sarah’s experience spans strategy development, risk management and funding growth in highly regulated and purpose-driven environments. Across a portfolio of board roles, Sarah has led organisational transformation, strengthened governance frameworks and contributed to national and international policy and advocacy. This combination of governance discipline and strategic influence will be a strong asset to Stroke Foundation.
Sarah said the appointment comes at a time when the opportunity for impact is clear.
“Stroke is so prevalent, and yet 80 per cent of stroke incidents are preventable. With a stroke occurring every 11 minutes in Australia, any progress across prevention, treatment and recovery will save lives and have a profound and positive impact.”
Sarah also highlighted the importance of lived experience in driving the organisation’s work.
“Lived experience does not sit on the edges here. It is embedded in how decisions are made, and that leads to better outcomes and better use of resources.”
As President, Sarah sees the Board’s role extending beyond governance to active advocacy.
“Boards in purpose-driven organisations need to be visible champions of the mission – an army of advocates to amplify the organisation’s work and help people understand why it matters and why it is worth backing.”
Stroke Foundation CEO, Dr Lisa Murphy said Sarah’s appointment comes at an important time for the organisation.
“Sarah brings deep governance expertise, strategic insight and a genuine connection to our mission. This combination will be invaluable as we continue to grow our profile, strengthen our funding base and expand our impact.”
Stroke Foundation acknowledges the significant contribution of outgoing President, Emeritus Professor Linda Kristjanson AO whose leadership has helped position the organisation strongly for its next chapter.
