Finding Strength in Recovery: My Journey Back to the Saddle

December 03, 2024

By Suzanne

Recovery after a stroke is a journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and moments of deep reflection. For me, the aftermath of my stroke included left-side weakness and balance issues, making it difficult to imagine a future where I could ride horses again—a passion I’ve held dear for as long as I can remember.

Thankfully, a good friend who is also a personal trainer stepped up to help. Together, we focused on strength training, particularly on my left side, and a variety of balance exercises to rebuild my confidence and physical capabilities. Rehabilitation wasn’t always smooth—it could feel demoralising at times—but I leaned on my roots as a cowgirl, embracing what my cowboy dad always called "grit." I was determined that no obstacle would keep me from the saddle.

Horses are more than just beautiful animals—they are therapeutic companions. Their intuitive understanding of human emotions is nothing short of magical. I discovered working with horses to be a powerful way to relax, breathe, and find solace. It’s something I recommend to anyone seeking mental clarity and emotional balance.

In my recovery, I learned the importance of setting goals tailored to my lifestyle and passions. Each milestone, no matter how small or long it took to achieve, was a source of immense pride. Whether it was Pilates, gym workouts, or simply walking up and down hills or sandy tracks, every bit of progress mattered.

I didn’t let the trips, falls, or bruises discourage me—they became reminders of the bigger goal I was chasing. With support from my community and the encouragement of others who understood my journey, I kept pushing forward.

Mental determination played a pivotal role in my physical recovery. The saying “one breath at a time, one step at a time, one day at a time” became my mantra. On tough days, I reminded myself to be kind and patient with my progress.

Today, while I still face challenges like PTSD, I’m stronger than ever. Though my left side remains too weak to mount a horse from that side, I’ve adapted—my horses are patient enough to be mounted from the right, or I find a trusty log to help!

I’m sharing my story because I know recovery is different for everyone, and it’s easy to feel alone in the process. Communities, like the ones we find on social media, are incredible spaces for hope, strength, and connection. They remind us we’re not alone and that we’re all warriors in our own right.

To fellow stroke survivors: never underestimate the power of grit, humor, and determination. Recovery is not a straight line, but with persistence and support, life can be full of meaning and joy. I’m just happy to still be here, chasing my dreams one step at a time.
