Marg does Stride4Stroke

November 18, 2019
My name is Marg, and this year I am participating in Stride4Stroke for the first time.

On 30 June 2018, at the age of 41, I suffered a stroke, cause unkown. My life has changed considerably over the last 15 months. At this stage, I’m only able to work part-time, I get so tired all the time, and there are things I can’t remember anymore. However, I am one of the lucky ones who can do these things, and so I’m forever grateful.

I have chosen to walk 60km during November for Stride4Stroke. This challenge means the world to me because education and awareness are key. If we can help just one person by raising funds and participating in this challenge, then it is worthwhile. I also want continued support for families as it affects their lives as well. Sometimes there are days when my body doesn’t seem to work normally, but I feel ok, and other days I look fine but am mentally exhausted. My children, husband, dog and work colleagues often recognise a ‘bad’ day before I do.

My stroke has made me realised that family and friends are vitally important in life and to enjoy the little things. My husband, children (14 and 12) and sister are striding with me, and my mum is also walking - by accident as she thought she was signing up to donate money but signed up to walk instead! This makes me proud as I know mum carries a lot of guilt as she was with me when I had my stroke and regrets not seeking help sooner.

I am really looking forward to walking throughout the month as a family and connecting as best we can.

As a mum, I’m super proud of my daughter Grace, who decided what we are doing wasn’t enough. She put a proposal together to run a fundraiser at her school, and this week her whole school is wearing blue for casual day, walking each lunchtime to see how far they can walk and her homeroom is cooking and selling lunch at the end of the week. I can’t wait to see Grace shine this week!

I want to say a massive THANK YOU to my husband Simon, who doesn’t say much but is the most supportive husband. Just the little words count. To Grace and Banjo my children, words cannot show how much they mean to me and the extra things they now have to do. They are just the best. To my parents, who were with me when it happened and supported me throughout the journey - a massive thank you. To our friends, family and workmates, thank you.

To everyone who is raising funds and awareness through Stride4Stroke - THANK YOU ALL. Together we can fight stroke!
